How Coaches and Speakers Leverage the Three Depths of Memory

And how can coaches, speakers or anyone looking to help their clients achieve greater success use three depths-of memory as an aid in doing so?

According to Dr. Alan Baddeley, a British Psychologist, our brain is capable of three depths of memory: the phonological loop, the episodic buffer, and semantic memory. The first depth, the phonological loop, allows us to hold information in our short-term memory by repeating it over and over again. The second depth, the episodic buffer, allows us to store information in our long-term memory by associating it with other memories. The third depth, semantic memory, allows us to access information that we have stored in our long-term memory.

The first depth of memory is the phonological loop. This is the part of your memory that deals with spoken language.   • How can I make my message clear and concise?

  • How can I use repetition to my advantage?

  • What words or phrases will stick in my customer's mind?

The second depth of memory is the episodic buffer. This is the part of your memory that stores events and experiences. When you have an experience, it is stored in your episodic buffer for a brief period of time. You can then use this information to solve problems. For example, if you're trying to remember the name of a person you met at a networking event, you would use your phonological loop to recall their name.

When considering how to apply episodic buffers to your problem-solving skills, ask yourself these questions:

  • What experiences can I draw from to solve this problem?

  • What people can I talk to who have similar experiences?

  • What resources can I use that will help me remember what I need to know?

The third depth of memory is semantic memory. This is the part of your memory that stores facts and concepts. When you learn a new fact or concept, it is stored in your semantic memory. You can then use this information to solve problems. For example, if you're trying to remember the capital of France, you would use your semantic memory to recall that it is Paris.

When considering how to apply semantic memory to your problem-solving skills, ask yourself these questions:

  • What facts do I need to know to solve this problem?

  • What concepts do I need to understand to solve this problem?

  • What resources can I use that will help me remember what I need to know
